A tour de force, the greatness of the Tipo 105 Alfa Romeo Giulia GT Coupe cannot be over embellished.
To set this larger than life sports car’s context, Alfa Romeo’s early motorsport program brought two Formula 1 World Championship crowns in the 1950’s, it’s second with Juan Manuel Fangio, plus 11 Mille Miglia and 10 Targa Florio titles.
By the 1960s, Alfa’s trophy cabinet had already entered automotive mythology but an unconquered Touring Car title was calling.
Fast forward to the 1966 ETCC season opener at Monza where Alfa Romeo, its Auto Delta racing team and the Tipo 105 Giulia Sprint GTA absolutely dominated, taking the top seven places, going on to claim the title that year, following up with back-to-back titles in 1967.
Fortunately for us, it was this racing pedigree that was fed directly into Alfa’s road car developments at the time – enter the Tipo 105 series Giulia GT Coupes.
A Giorgetto Giugiaro-penned masterpiece that became an instant classic within a period defined by the fusion of artistry and performance, Alfa’s 105 Giulia GT Coupes were more successful at combining a balance of metal and glass, practicality, and pure driving entertainment than anything before or probably since.
The most sought-after of these 105 series road cars is the 1967 Giulia Sprint GT Veloce.
Produced in limited numbers and nicknamed ‘Scalino’ (Step Nose) for its distinct air-flow bonnet design that was paired with the beautiful single headlight configuration, this phenomenal sports car wears the Quadrifoglio on its C-pillar. To the initiated, that green and gold badge signalled this was the ultimate performance model which, made this car more expensive than a Jaguar E-Type when new.
Combining a sublime all aluminium twin-cam engine producing more horsepower and torque than the GT, with cutting edge four-wheel disc brakes, tuned suspension, a 5-speed manual transmission and lightweight monocoque construction, the Scalino Veloce also featured a number of upgrades that you’ll only find on the Veloce model including, stainless steel bumpers with no overriders, a competition black mesh front grille, competition bucket seats with distinct basketweave trim, aluminium and black enamel finish steering wheel, timber veneer dash and ‘Disegno di Bertone’ badges for the front arches.
One of, if not the most stunning in existence, this beautiful Australian delivered 1967 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT Veloce offered here for the first time in many years is the product of a nineteen-month, zero expense spared and exacting restoration that was completed in 2014.
Corresponding with its 'La Macchina Del Tempo' heritage certificate, chassis number AR752130 was sold new to Adelaide, South Australia.
Still as crisp to the most minute detail as the day the restoration works were completed, this car was purchased, under the guidance of a classic Alfa Specialist, by a well-regarded private collector in 2013 from its long-term owner, Mr. Marco Romano.
Mr. Romano had owned the car since his youth and had cared for the vehicle well, keeping it largely original and in good running and order, evidenced in the pre-restoration photos that accompany the history file. But like the vast majority of Alfa’s from this period, the car had a number of aftermarket parts fitted and was in need of restoration.
Works commenced immediately for a complete nut and bolt restoration and to ensure the highest quality standards were maintained, the following specialists were commissioned. The entire process was fully documented.
Alfa Romeo specialist, Frank Failla of Frank’s Pitstop Motors, Sydney completed all mechanical works from disassembly to assembly. Everything was either replaced with new/old stock parts including brakes and suspension, right down to the correct engine bay hose clips, or rebuilt including the original engine, transmission and differential.
The body and paint were entrusted to Vince Muriti and the team at the finest body repair facility in Australia, Perfect Autobody, Sydney. The entire shell was stripped and rotisseried, the original glass was polished and refitted and the correct Rosso Alfa 501 paint was electronically matched and flawlessly applied. The depth of finish, across the entirety of the car needs to be seen to be appreciated.
Finally, the interior was masterfully re-trimmed to factory standards from the perforated headliner to the timber veneer dash fascia and mid-grey carpets by John Barsoumian at Car Interiors Plus, Sydney. His handcrafted workmanship used exacting new/old stock materials rather than source sub-standard ready-made products online including the sensational basketweave competition bucket seat leather.
The result of such a painstaking process delivered a simply unmatched, authentic range topping 105 Series Alfa Romeo Giulia as at home on a Concours lawn as it is blasting its fabled twin-cam engine through tree lined roads, or Lake Garda like those fortunate journo's that tested the car when new.
Jeremy Clarkson once famously said, “You can’t be a true petrolhead until you’ve owned an Alfa Romeo”. Few cars can amaze, entrance and greatly impress when new and again in later years but this very special Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT Veloce does exactly that.
Simple and sophisticated, on every drive, it’s a car that feels fast. You can rifle through all five gears, the steering is light and feels perfectly weighted and the chassis is so responsive to your inputs- but you’ll still be sub-100 km/h and won’t have the carabiniere breathing down your neck.
A classic that epitomises the golden era that was 1960’s automotive design and one we’ve always believed has been undervalued, poised for higher prices into the future, this exceptional, world-beating and original Australian delivered 1967 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT Veloce is pure driving enjoyment. Now released from tempered storage and ready for its next fortunato custodian.
