The Morris Cooper S, affectionately known as the Mini Cooper S holds a significant place in world motoring culture.
A giant killer, the Cooper S dominated in rallying, circuit racing, and hill climbs during the 1960s and early 1970s. Victories on home soil at big time events like the 1966 Gallaher 500 at Mount Panorama, Bathurst where the Cooper S took the first 9 positions cemented its reputation as a formidable competitor and a legend of Australian motorsport.
The Cooper S’s blend of torque, free revving engine, agility and reliability not only made it a favourite among drivers and race teams but the New South Wales Highway Patrol to boot.
Beyond the race track, the Cooper S name entered our general lexicon like John, Paul, George and Ringo as a cultural icon. Its charming design, ability to seat 4 adults plus luggage in comfort, and yet deliver performance on road that left far more expensive makes in the dust, kicked off the emergence of the "hot-hatch" phenomenon.
Off the back of the success of the MK1 variant, the MK2 Cooper S commenced production at the BMC plant in Zetland, Sydney on June 1969. Much improved over the Mk1, the Mk2 included a fully synchromesh 4-speed manual gearbox, 'thick flange' engine block, an alternator replacing the old generator, flared wheel arches and new badging.
These updates, together with a production run of only 2,419 units, versus the MK1s 4,986 makes the Mk2 the more desirable variant to own amongst today’s enthusiasts and collectors.
The car you always hope to find, this stunning and fully restored 1970 Morris Mini Cooper S Mk2 we are proud to offer here rolled off the Zetland production line in May of 1970 and is finished in the ever-popular factory colour combination of Connaught Green with contrast Crystal White roof over Black trim.
For the discerning enthusiast, importantly, this car retains its numbers matching engine and body, as cross-referenced by the Compliance Plate affixed to the vertical face of the crossmember behind the power brake booster, along with stampings located on the engine block and radiator shroud.
Beautifully restored and detailed circa 2015, this exceptional car also retains other features unique to the MK2 Cooper S from the correct 120 mph speedometer, plastic heater housing, to the twin-screw light housings, raised oval bonnet badge and squared-off air filter box.
It must be said, like the balance of the car, the engine bay has been painstakingly finished to factory specification with the correct style hoses, clamps, decals and colour finish on all surfaces. Even the period correct, higher value Dunlop SP R7 tyres have been fitted. This world-class level of restoration quality is rare and spares no expense to complete.
Delivering sheer driving enjoyment for more than 60 years, the best part of this Mk 2 Cooper S is getting behind the wheel. The benefit of owning an example as well restored as this, is every time you step through the fine door apertures and sink into the bucket seat, it feels as though you're experiencing what it was like to own a brand new one in 1970.
