“The Evo I is a precision instrument born of pure competition... It doesn’t just look like a DTM car for the road, it drives with the raw, mechanical urgency of one.”— Car & Driver, 1989

Uncompromising, rare, and forged in the heat of DTM warfare, the 1989 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evolution I stands as pure homologation royalty.

While standard 190E’s were built for Autobahn cruising, the Evolution I was built in micro numbers strictly to satisfy FIA Group A homologation regulations. Every millimetre was re-engineered to tear down the BMW M3’s dominance of the DTM.

Debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1989, just 502 examples were hand-assembled. Offered only in left hand drive, all sold out immediately and every car departed Stuttgart in Blauschwarz Metallic, the halo marker for Mercedes’ high-performance road cars.

The upgrades were plentiful, a shorter-stroke, larger-bore M102.991 engine by Cosworth, a dogleg Getrag five-speed manual transmission with taller ratios, a wider track with +14mm front, +24mm rear, larger 16-inch “manhole” alloys by Fuchs, bigger brakes, a shorter ratio rear axle, adjustable self-levelling suspension with 3 settings at the touch of a button, and a new aerodynamic bodykit with aggressive flared arches, a deeper front splitter, and an adjustable rear aerofoil.

Success was immediate. The Evo I racked up eight DTM victories in 1989. From the high-speed jumps of the Nürburgring to the gruelling Norisring “Street Fight”, where the Evolution showed it’s punch out of the hairpins, it went toe-to-toe with the M3 and Ford’s Sierra RS500, delivering the engine and chassis foundation that would ultimately power Mercedes-Benz to its 1992 championship sweep.

This spectacular car was delivered new 28th September 1989 via Jussieu Automobile (Mercedes-Benz), Paris. Representing 1 of just 30 original French market allocations, this original, numbers matching car offers a far more compelling provenance acquisition than the more than 400 German-market cars.

Beyond its homologation hardware, this example was also specified with a number of highly desirable factory options, including a power sunroof, perforated all-leather Recaro bucket seats, central locking, power windows, illuminated vanity mirrors, and an automatic antenna.

Preserved in superb original condition, this example has covered 132,000, fully documented kilometres under the care of a small number of traceable custodians.

During it’s time in France, this car was continuously maintained through Mercedes-Benz, evident in the trove of detailed service receipts that make up the majority of the history file.

Then, expertly sourced and privately imported to Australia in 2023, this car has spent the last few years in a private Sydney based collection where circa $70,000 has been spent on mechanical refurbishment overhauling the brakes, steering, suspension, electronics, fuel and cooling systems, engine and driveline with European specialists, City Performance Centre.

This rigorous upkeep throughout this cars entire life culminated in a Runner-Up award at the 2024 Mercedes-Benz Club Concours d’Elegance, confirming its status as a collector-grade survivor.

Mechanically superb and razor-sharp on the road, the car presents impeccably throughout. Its Blue Black paintwork retaining a deep metallic lustre, while the original Black leather interior maintains its correct factory matte texture across every touchpoint. A real credit to the previous custodians and an asset to the next.

Accompanied by its original owners manuals, documented ownership history, Mercedes-Benz main dealer service and recent overhaul works receipts, an official Mercedes-Benz Certificate of Conformity, original tool-kit, and Concours d’Elegance certificate and medallion, this is a prized collector's car in turnkey condition.

The model that signified Mercedes-Benz’s glorious return to full factory works motorsport, and the car that stole the hearts of many business executives, the 190E Evolution I is a masterclass in homologation engineering. A race car engineered for the street.
