“Piloting the new 911 through the Provencal Alps is a bewitching experience: narrow mountain roads twisting ever forward, an air-cooled turbocharged symphony resonating behind you. The steering isolates nasty bumps while communicating the pavement characteristics and tire-slip angles explicitly. Throttle and brake response is lightning-quick and laser-precise, although heel-arid-toeing the bottom-pivoted pedals requires some practice. And there's that panoramic four-corner visibility 911’s have always been famous for. These elements combine to allow the driver to put the car precisely where he or she wants it on the road.” – Car and Driver, 1993
The original Porsche 930 Turbo turned the automotive universe on its ear. The road-going version of the giant Type 935 racer, its introduction in 1974 placed the German automaker squarely amongst leaders of the supercar fraternity. Then, in 1991 the second-generation Turbo arrived, packaged in a svelte Type 964 shell, and it too was a ground-breaker.
Available through 1990-1994 and penned by Benjamin Dimson, also responsible for the 959, the 964 Turbo featured significant improvements over the 930, including the much-loved integrated bumpers, a smoother engine feel with full boost available at lower revs making it less prone to turbo lag, more power on tap for a total of 320hp and vastly improved, bank-vault build quality.
One of only 15 cars delivered to the Australian market throughout the entire Type 964 production run, finished in its factory correct Grand Prix White over Black leather, numbers matching and desirably optioned with limited-slip differential, A/C, electric seats and sunroof, this low kilometre 1992 Porsche 964 Turbo is one sought after machine.
The first time offered to market in over 15 years, this 964 Turbo was sold new by Scuderia Veloce Motors, Sydney in January of 1992. In impeccable condition, this car has also been fastidiously serviced by both Porsche and classic Porsche specialists throughout its entire lifetime, evidenced in its log-book and today, has travelled just 94,000 kilometres.
Just the example you’d hope to find, from the superb condition of the Grand Prix White paintwork that has just undergone a comprehensive professional detail with ceramic coating applied as well, through to the rarely seen and very collectable Blaupunkt Symphony RDS stereo with digital display and tweeters built specifically for the 964 model, the near perfect double stitched leather upholstery and original Porsche decals still present throughout the glass, bonnet and engine bay, there’s no wonder this car has won two previous concours awards.
Accompanying the car is the original book pack including all owner’s manuals, warranty cards and log-books kept in the Porsche black leather wallet, both concours award certificates from 1999 and 2015 and a good amount of service receipts detailing works by both Porsche and classic Porsche specialists since new.
Recently serviced in preparation for its new custodian, this 1992 Grand Prix White 964 Turbo presents with a crispness to the detail often lacking in other supercars of its era. There’s a solid, fresh feel right from when you first sit inside, gear changes feel perfectly precise, steering is direct and you can sense this car is capable of a lot more than us mere mortals will ever throw at it.
An opportunity to secure an incredible example of one of Porsche’s best and rarest road cars.
