The Audi Porsche RS2 Avant

In 1993, two industrial titans created automotive folklore. Audi possessed an unparallelled Group B, all-wheel-drive, five-cylinder turbo platform, the perfect basis for a halo model to compete with BMW’s M and Mercedes’ AMG lines.

Porsche, simultaneously, held spare capacity at its famed Rössle-Bau Werk 2 facility in Zuffenhausen, the very plant that built the Type 959 supercar.

The result of their handshake was Project Typ P1 - the RS2 Avant. A limited production, instant collectable, hand assembled by Porsche craftsmen alongside the 911 that looked like an estate and drove like a 911 Turbo. 

The project was spearheaded by Porsche AG designer Michael Hölscher, a name synonymous with a number of secret prototypes, and the little-known V10 Carrera GT. 

Specially finished Audi 80 estate shells were pulled from production early and shipped to Porsche where Hölscher and his team fundamentally re-engineered the engine, gearbox, chassis and body with new parts from their own sportscar royalty:

“We found it essential to make the Porsche character immediately noticeable and the associations clear.”  - Michael Holscher, 2021.

- The engine was enhanced by grafting on a 30% larger K24 turbocharger, heavy-duty intercooler, high-flow injectors, reprofiled camshafts, larger exhaust, and bespoke Bosch Motronic engine management. Output soared from 230hp to 315hp.

- Porsche mated the engine exclusively to a heavy-duty CRB-code Getrag 6-speed manual transmission. Reinforced with hardened gear sets and a motorsport clutch. It channels power through Audi's permanent Torsen AWD Quattro system and features a lockable rear differential at the push of a button.

- The wheel hubs were modified to carry 17-inch Porsche Cup 1 alloys lifted directly from the 964 Turbo, the car sits 40mm lower with a wider track suspended by Porsche-tuned Bilstein dampers with thicker anti-roll bars.

- Stopping power comes from iconic 4-piston Brembo “Big Red” monobloc calipers wearing crisp white "PORSCHE"straight off the 968 Clubsport.

- Exterior equipment featured aerodynamic 993 Turbo teardrop door mirrors, a custom 993 front bar with larger intakes housing 993 indicator and fog lamps, bespoke rear bar, tricolour-striped "RS Porsche” badging and a 993/964 inspired heckblende.

- Inside, Recaro supplied heavily bolstered N-Joy buckets, Porsche fitted authentic carbon fibre weave across the dashboard and door cappings and on blue Alcantara interior cars, a rare blue metallic thread was hand-woven directly into the carbon structure, plus a thicker rimmed leather steering wheel, and white gauges.

Faster than a McLaren F1 and the 993 Turbo from 0-50km/h, the RS2 goes on to dispatch 0-100 km/h in a factory claimed 5.4 seconds. But to those who know, that time is way off true capability. Real world, it’s closer to 4.7 seconds.

Today, they’re criminally underrated. With no Fast & Furious cameos, the RS2 occupies its own rarefied air. A bona fide 'if you know, you know' cult classic, and a very small batch of just 182 were ever made in right hand drive.

This Audi RS2 Avant

The superb and original right hand drive 1995 Audi RS2 Avant we’re incredibly proud to offer here is one of only 19 ever delivered new to the arid clims of South Africa. 

We’ve had the rare pleasure of handling a few RS2’s and can state with certainty that residing in the dry, salt-free environment of the southern hemisphere, including its private import to Australia in 2021, this exceptional example has escaped the harsh degradation that has claimed many of its European equivalents.

Ordered in the historic launch colour of Nogaro Blue Pearl and featuring the most desirable interior specification of Black Nappa leather with Blue Alcantara inserts paired with Blue carbon fibre trim this special, highly original car has travelled a relatively low 114,000 Kilometres with an extensive documented service history in accompaniment.

Optioned with factory cruise control and an electric tilt/slide sunroof, this is an extraordinarily hard-to-find example. Having just received a major service complete with new timing belt, fluids, filters, spark plugs, and new Michelin Pilot Sport tyres, it’s fully turnkey, fully complied for Australian roads and ready to grace any world class collection.

An absolute benchmark of preservation, this RS2 displays a level of micro-detail and freshness not ordinarily seen on surviving examples. Retaining its complete treasure trove of factory Audi/Porsche hallmarks from the soft Blue Alcantara, pristine engine bay, to the deep metallic finish of the paintwork, all tell-tale signs show this is a truly cherished enthusiast car. 

You’ll have been lucky if you’ve ever seen an Audi RS2 in the metal, let alone one as well-kept as this. There is one on display at the Audi Museum, but in their ode to the RS2 in 2020, Wheels Australia Magazine claimed – “Buying one in Australia is virtually impossible”. 

Suffice to say, for the discerning collector or enthusiast, finding a survivor that balances factory originality with this level of cosmetic purity and the provenance an RS2 carries is exceptionally rare. 

This car represents a blue chip opportunity to acquire a true, unrepeatable neo-classic that became a landmark car in the history of not one but two of our greatest auto makers. The RS2 Avant is a living, breathing monument to automotive excellence.
