The Lancia Delta HF Integrale Evoluzione:
The Lancia Delta HF Integrale stands as one of the most significant performance cars ever made. A phenom in competition, but what made it a cult classic was how completely that competition experience made it into the road car.
With 6 consecutive World Rally Championship manufacturers’ titles, a remarkable 46 race victories and 4 driver’s crowns with Juha Kankkunen, Miki Biasion and Markku Alén at the wheel, the Integrale remains the most successful WRC car in history.
In 1993, Lancia released the final evolution of its works rally car for the road. Named the Delta HF Integrale Evoluzione II, its most immediate identifier is its monster bonnet bulge that houses a larger 215hp 2.0L 16-valve turbocharged inline-4 and makes this version the fastest, most complete road-going Integrale ever made.
The arrival of the 16-valve engine also ushered in a series of other significant technical upgrades as the FIA imposed a 300-horsepower ceiling in Group A, forcing Lancia’s engineers to shift focus from outright power to torque and tractability. The ultimate winner was us, the changes gave the Evo II it’s signature white knuckle throttle response.
“This car has torque. Torque is really important, no?” – Miki Biaison.
Over and above the engine upgrades, the Evo II also received new lightweight, heavy-duty suspension, a 20mm lower ride height, bigger brakes with ABS and other FIA homologated go faster bits like a radiator for the power-steering pump, roof spoiler raisers, plus larger 16-inch alloys by Speedline, a Red wrinkle finish cam cover, front strut brace, new blue tinted glass, optional air-conditioning, iconic high-backed Recaro SP3 bucket seats, revised Veglia Borletti gauges and a new Momo Corse steering wheel.
This Final Edition:
The car we’re incredibly proud offered here, for the first time in 14 years, is the exceptionally rare 1995 Lancia Delta Integrale Evoluzione II “Edizione Finale”.
The most powerful and highest specification road-going Delta ever produced, featuring a number of options not seen on other cars, at the request of Japan’s Lancia Distributor, Garage Italya, Lancia arranged for several trips of Japan’s top customers, known as the Deltisti to visit the factory to aid in design of a special edition Delta to mark productions end of the winningest WRC car of all time.
The result was the ‘Edizione Finale’, a numbered, instant collectible reserved solely for Japanese domestic market delivery, limited to just 250 units. All were sold immediately upon release and featured:
- An engine management upgrade that increased the Evo II 2.0-litre turbo from 215hp to a monster 250hp
- Historical Rosso Amaranto 119/F paintwork, a colour deeply woven into Lancia's racing/rally heritage, finished with the famous High Fidelity Yellow and Blue Torino GT stripe
- Improved ‘street-spec’ suspension with front and rear Eibach progressive springs, lowering the car by 30mm and stiffening chassis rigidity
- Rear OMP strut brace
- 16-inch Speedline Corse ‘Monte Carlo’ alloy wheels finished in Anthracite
- Recaro SP3 Bucket seats trimmed in two-tone Black Avus cloth and Grey perforated Alcantara
- A mesh GT front grille to improve cooling for the hp increase, garnished with a numbered ‘Elfantino’ HF enamel badge
- Matte Black bonnet and guard air vents, a carbon fibre fuel cap, carbon fibre Momo Corse steering wheel centre, and special Turin HF external badging
- Short-shifter with aluminium gear knob and carbon fibre surround
- Push button starter mounted to the dashboard
- Silver instrument fascia
- Aluminium OMP sports pedals and rally OMP passenger foot plate
- The limited-edition numbered plaque mounted to centre console
One of the finest extant, this Final Edition Integrale is car #139 and was delivered new to Tokyo via the official Lancia importer of Japan, November 1995, optioned with air conditioning and drivers’ side weather shield.
This superb car remained with its sole private owner in Tokyo from new until export to Australia, fastidiously maintained by the official distributor over that time and later curated for sale by premier collector car specialists, Garage Collezione in 2012.
Then personally imported to Sydney, Australia with 71,000 kilometres, where it has since been preserved in a small private collection. Crucially, this Final Edition’s entire maintenance history has been meticulously captured in the original service book and accompanying receipts, forming a comprehensive file that rarely comes with these cars today.
Only ever built in left-hand-drive and not sold in Australia, Japanese Integrales are considered very desirable. With a strong rally enthusiast culture, they tend to be free of corrosion and well maintained, just like this one, largely because salt is not used on their roads during winters, unlike their European counterparts.
Travelled only 73,000 original Kilometres today, in 2022 this Final Edition underwent a no expense spared mechanical refresh with Sydney based Lancia specialists. Works included:
- Major service with new timing belt and water pump
- Spark plugs
- Cam cover gasket
- Brake pads
- New fluids and filters
- Rear suspension bushes
- Front control arm bushes
- Front bump stops
Once works were complete, the underside was then subject to dry ice blasting and resealing, preserving delicate factory markings like the build date “28/10/94” hand written in chalk on the underside of the fuel tank.
The latest service works were completed June of this year with the car now presenting in exemplary factory original, turn-key condition.
On the road, this exceptional Final Edition feels fast. We noticed the healthy bump in horsepower and corner turn-in feel from the Eibach springs immediately over a standard Evo II during our road test and there’s a solid, fresh feel right from when you first step inside.
The factory short shifter feels immensely precise, the steering is weighty and turn-in has a brilliant bite. You get a sense this car is able to tackle a lot more than we could ever throw at it. This mechanical responsiveness is exactly what collectors and enthusiasts hunt for.
A reference example with a crispness to the detail lacking in most others, this car presents in excellent cosmetic order everywhere too. Hard to find factory quirks are all there, the original OMP decal on the rear strut-brace, the lower placed indicator and HF wing badges only found on Japanese Domestic Market cars, the foil PPG paint code decal, the original lauded “Blue” Lancia Glass still in every window, and even the original pre-delivery plastics still encase the door cards and carpets. Often, the Red wrinkle finish of the cam cover has perished or been poorly refinished as well but this one is pristine.
Most importantly though, all the factory Final Edition details are still accounted for, from the Anthracite Speedline alloys, the push button starter and carbon fibre trim, to the OMP passenger foot plate, short shifter, limited edition badging and special Rosso Amaranto paintwork with a brilliant depth of finish.
Accompanied by its original book pack kept in the vinyl Lancia wallet, receipts for all past and present service works, both original keys and all corresponding import and compliance documentation, this Final Edition is among the best documented cars that remain.
Incredibly sought after today, all top-flight collectible car specialists around the world will have a special Delta in stock at some point, sitting alongside traditional Bluechip classics, with the Final Edition at the top of that wish list.
It’s a growing sign the halo status of these cars is gaining the spotlight it deserves and over the last 10 years, we’ve seen demand is ever increasing for the best examples.
Evo Magazine recently said:
“Though more than capable of blinding speed across challenging roads and in dire conditions, the Integrale’s other attributes are what have helped it endure and remain adored”.
This sentiment is why values and demand continue to remain strong for the best examples of the Integrale, and it doesn’t get any better than this superb, original Final Edition. The very last and best equipped of the breed of the winningest rally car of all time. The complete package.
