Since the introduction of the Type 930 in 1975, the Porsche 911 Turbo has stood as an enduring icon of power, precision, and engineering excellence- the pinnacle of production in the 911 range.
One of the fastest road-going cars in the world, after a four-year hiatus, 2001 marked a triumphant return to form when Porsche launched the all new 911 Type 996 Turbo for the new Millennium - Tagline: “Pinned to the back of your skull”.
An entirely different car to the balance of the 996 line-up, the Turbo model was equipped with the now ultra-collectable Le Mans winning GT1 Mezger 3.6 litre, twin-turbocharged flat-six engine. With added four-wheel-drive derived from the 959, Porsches Stability Management and a colossal output of 420hp and 413lbft of torque, the new Turbo dispatched the 0-100km/h sprint in just 3.9 seconds.
The new Turbo paved a whole new era for Porsche with a monocoque bodyshell that was some forty-five percent stiffer yet lighter than that of its predecessor, improved aerodynamics, a larger, more ergonomic interior and new technology like Bi-Xenon headlights, an electronic bi-wing rear spoiler, multi-function on-board computer, wider stance (even wider than the GT3) and more aggressive styling with big 18-inch Turbo Twist alloys to fill the pumped arches- the 911 Turbo was/is an out and out Supercar.
In their 2001 review, Car and Driver magazine called the new 911 Turbo “simply intoxicating, the Turbo is not only the fastest-ever street-legal 911, it's also the most refined”.
Finished in the ever distinctive and highly sought after colour of Speed Yellow over Black leather trim with contrast Yellow belts and Aluminium instrumentation, offered here in superb original condition is this Australian delivered 2002 Porsche 996 911 Turbo with a 6-Speed manual transmission- 1 of only approximately 64 cars that were sold in Australia for that year.
Delivered new by Porsche Centre Gold Coast, this Turbo is the one you hope to find. A clue to its fine condition inside and out is the well-documented service file in accompaniment.
All stamps are by Porsche and Porsche specialists including a visit to the home of the marque’s designated classic department, Porsche Centre Melbourne in 2023 to address any and all outstanding items totalling $12,000 - carrying out a major service, replacing all suspension bump stops, bonnet struts, and a new set of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tyres.
Then, in November 2024, the car received a fresh annual service, gearbox refurbishment and new clutch kit as preventative maintenance. With nothing more to spend, this Turbo has had the right technicians turning the right tools from day one and is ready to drive and enjoy right off the showroom floor.
Yes, the exterior is striking and so well-kept but stepping inside, the first thing you notice is that this car just feels right in all respects. The double stitched leather sports seats are still so firm and fresh and there is next to no wear on all of the controls, they still carry that factory matte finish. There is a modern Continental stereo with Bluetooth connectivity and charging port, the original also in accompaniment but otherwise, this car is exactly as it was on the Porsche showroom floor in 2002.
By far and away though, the best part is how fresh and tight everything feels on the road. Acceleration is blisteringly fast, the kind that makes you think, is this even legal? Steering is well weighted and the confidence the all-wheel-drive handling delivers makes you want to only go faster whether covering long distances at speed or tackling your nearest twisted road.
This 911 Turbo is unique. At 23 years of age, it still manages to extract the most out of what makes the 911 Turbo so special. It’s rare, usable, incredibly fast, iconic and collectible. This package still presents so much value.
Accompanied by both factory keys, all original log books and manuals within the leather Porsche wallet, the original spare wheel with compressor and tool-kit in tow and a slew of service receipts, this is one desirable machine.
