In the landscape of modern Porsche performance cars, few carry a reverence like the Type 996 911 GT3.
Born from Porsche’s relentless success in endurance racing, the homologation special GT3 distilled Hans Mezger’s Flat 6, famously derived from the Le Mans-winning 911 GT1, into its most focused road-going form.
EVO Magazine said of the 996 GT3:
“It feels like a racing car that just happens to be road legal.”
Zero driver aids or Apple CarPlay, abundant in steering feel, nuanced handling and all-consuming excitement.
The enhanced 996.2 GT3 arrived in 2003. Lighter and faster, it was the first car fully developed by Andreas Preuninger, the godfather of all things GT-related at Weissach.
Featuring larger brakes, wider and lighter Fuchs alloys, and comprehensively revised suspension, the second-generation GT3 benefited from meaningful gains in both power and torque. The introduction of drive-by-wire throttle and Variocam broadened the engine’s torque curve, while simultaneously extending the rev limit to a heady 8,200rpm.
Further internal refinements, including lightened valves, pistons and connecting rods, along with the deletion of the crankshaft damper reduced the mass of the flat-six by 3.5kg, sharpening response and character. Porsche claim a 21hp increase over the first generation, but real world feel is more like a 40-50hp uplift.
The car offered here is a late production 2004 Porsche 911 GT3 Touring. One of just 39 ever delivered to Australia and this superb original car is particularly compelling.
Sold new to Sydney, February 2004 by Porsche Centre Willoughby, it’s finished in the hero combination Arctic Silver over Black hide with Guards Red belts and enhanced by the desirable Recaro Clubsport seat option striking a perfect balance between usability and pure driving enjoyment.
Having travelled just 33,000 kilometres, the car presents in what can only be described as remarkably well preserved, near-new condition.
To the trained eye, this goes far beyond superficial cleanliness:
In short, this is a car that has not simply been maintained, it has been carefully preserved.
Accompanied by its complete original book set, keys, and an extensive history file, including the completed extended factory warranty card dated 2008 (a tell-tale sign of the type of ownership this car has enjoyed), plus a large maintenance receipt book containing mostly Porsche specialist Bob Wyms Automotive works receipts over the last 20 years, this is a turnkey example with nothing to spend. The last service completed March of this year.
For many years, the Type 996 generation has sat in the shadow of its predecessors and successors. That time has passed.
Today, collectors and drivers are recognising the 996 GT3 for what it truly is: The last of the truly analogue GT3's, the purest expression of the Mezger engine in a road car and a car developed during one of Porsche’s most dominant racing eras.
As a result, the finest, and most original examples now lead a well overdue global resurgence in demand and value.
Cars like this are increasingly difficult to find.
Australian delivered, exceptionally low mileage, beautifully preserved, and complete in every respect, it represents exactly the sort of GT3 that discerning collectors now seek out.
Not modified. Not over-restored. Not compromised. Simply, An outstanding example of one of the most important modern 911s.
