By the early 2000s, Porsche knew the 911 had something to prove. The Type 996 had saved the company financially but divided the core customer base. Restoring the model’s reputation required more than a light refresh.
What followed was one of Porsche’s most ambitious development programmes to date. Investing heavily into an R&D effort that rewrote more than eighty percent of the outgoing car inside and out, the result was the all-new Type 997.
Reassuringly familiar, with a quality of engineering and finish that re-established the 911 as a benchmark for usable performance, the Type 997 combined traditional 911 design with the demands of a new tech-led era. It marked Porsche’s return to form, and crucially, to profitability.
Then came the Type 997.2. Launched in 2008, you couldn’t call it a facelift. This was in truth another major engineering leap and the one to own today.
Beneath the skin sat a brand-new Direct Fuel Injection flat-six that was more powerful, efficient, and reliable than before. Just as significant was the debut of the PDK dual-clutch gearbox, its design directly lifted from Porsche’s Le Mans racing programme, where lightning-fast, clutchless shifts had long been a competitive advantage.
The PDK was and still is the fastest shifting sports automatic money can buy and its arrival in a road going 911 marked Porsche’s 100th Le Mans class victory.
Compact, communicative, and capable of delivering both refinement and rawness at the flick of a switch, its these hallmarks of the 997 911 that make it a favourite of ours at Sports Classic and a cult (modern) classic that generally tops so many purists ‘ultimate driving 911' lists.
Delivered new through Porsche Centre Melbourne, January 2009, having known this car for many years, this superb three owner Basalt Black on Black perforated leather Porsche 911 Type 997.2 Carrera captures the brief perfectly for the ultimate drivers 911.
