2019 Porsche 911 991.2 GT3 RS

By the close of the 2010s, the future of the naturally aspirated engine hung in the balance. 

Amid tightening emissions standards and the inexorable rise of turbocharging and hybridisation, unveiled to a rapturous audience at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, the 991.2 GT3 RS represented the ultimate evolution of the Mezger-inspired flat-six engine in a road-going car. 

This 4.0L screamer became the swan song of the naturally aspirated 911 in its most hardcore, track-honed form. No turbos, no compromise, and no apologies. 

Under the guidance of Andreas Preuninger, Porsche’s GT division had once again distilled decades of motorsport experience into a road car that could lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife in a scarcely believable 6 minutes and 56 seconds. 520hp paired with Porsche’s most advanced aero package; widened, lowered, and aggressively vented, the new GT3 RS’s lap was nine seconds quicker than the Carrera GT…

The improvements over its predecessor were both nuanced and substantial. The chassis was enhanced with motorsport-derived rose-jointed suspension, rear-wheel steering, and dynamic engine mounts. Weight savings were achieved via a magnesium roof, carbon fibre panels, and a polycarbonate rear screen. The seven-speed PDK gearbox was reworked for even faster shifts, and there was all the latest communications connectivity inside. But it’s trick up the sleeve was the way it translated grip, balance and steering feel to the driver. Absolutely benchmark-setting.
